Milwaukee Public Museum: Inspiring Curiosity, Preserving History, and Connecting Communities

For more than 140 years, the Milwaukee Public Museum (MPM) has been a cornerstone of education, culture, and discovery in Wisconsin. As one of the nation’s premier natural history museums, MPM is dedicated to inspiring curiosity, preserving the world’s stories, and connecting people to science, culture, and our shared human experience.

A Legacy of Learning and Discovery

Founded in 1882, Milwaukee Public Museum has built a legacy as a pioneering institution. From immersive dioramas and cultural exhibits to hands-on science experiences, MPM seeks to connect visitors with the natural world across different periods and perspectives. Its vast collections—spanning anthropology, zoology, geology, history, and botany—support research, education, and public engagement across the region and beyond.

Education at the Heart of the Mission

Education is central to MPM’s work. The museum serves students, educators, families, and lifelong learners through interactive exhibits, school programs, workshops, and community outreach. By blending storytelling with scientific research, MPM helps visitors better understand the natural world, diverse cultures, and humanity’s evolving relationship with the planet.

Looking Ahead: A New Museum for the Future

MPM is also preparing for its next chapter with the development of a new, world-class museum in downtown Milwaukee, called the Nature & Culture Museum of Wisconsin.  When it opens in 2027, this museum will continue MPM’s tradition of immersive, objects-based storytelling while incorporating innovative design, sustainable practices, and expanded educational opportunities. The project reflects MPM’s commitment to remaining a dynamic, accessible, and forward-thinking institution for generations to come.

A Valued Community Partner

Beyond its exhibitions, Milwaukee Public Museum plays an important role as a community partner—collaborating with schools, cultural organizations, nonprofits, and businesses to strengthen civic engagement and economic vitality. Its presence contributes to tourism, workforce development, and the cultural fabric of Milwaukee and Wisconsin.

Celebrating a Trusted Institution

As a trusted institution rooted in scholarship, education, and community impact, Milwaukee Public Museum continues to shape how people learn about the world and their place in it. Through preservation, innovation, and inclusive storytelling, MPM remains a vital resource that inspires wonder, dialogue, and discovery every day.
