Preserving Culture, Empowering Community: Meet the Shee Yee Community of Milwaukee

For nearly four decades, Milwaukee’s strength has grown from its diverse cultural tapestry. At the heart of this vibrant community is the Shee Yee Community of Milwaukee, Inc. (SYC). Established in 1988 as a federal and state registered not-for-profit organization, SYC originally stepped forward to provide vital community resources and family support to newly arrived Hmong refugees.

As Milwaukee's Hmong community has grown, so too has SYC’s vital role—evolving from an essential resettlement lifeline into a dynamic engine for cultural preservation and civic empowerment.

A Foundational History of Service

When families first arrived in the area, navigating a new country presented immediate hurdles. SYC met these challenges head-on by providing foundational services that remain a key part of their legacy:

• Language Access: Providing translation and interpretation services to bridge communication gaps.

• Guidance & Support: Offering personalized consultation and family counseling services.

• Sacred Traditions: Supporting families through critical Hmong cultural rituals, such as traditional funeral services.

  
  

Honoring Traditions for the Next Generation

As the community took root, SYC expanded its mission to deeply focus on the preservation of its rich culture and heritage. By teaching youth Hmong folk songs, intricate dance, classical music, and the qeej (a traditional windpipe instrument), they ensure sacred history is passed down to younger generations. These efforts culminate in major regional celebrations, including the annual Milwaukee Hmong New Year.

Advancing Health Equity and Wellness

A healthy community is a prosperous one. SYC acts as a crucial liaison between Western healthcare systems and traditional Hmong cultural perspectives. Their public health initiatives include educational workshops on physical and mental well-being, localized opioid prevention programs, and strategic partnerships with medical professionals to reduce area health disparities.

To build a stronger local economy, SYC heavily promotes education and cultural development. From coordinating youth chess clubs to offering workforce readiness programs, the organization empowers Hmong individuals to become highly productive citizens and foster a vibrant, inclusive community for the City of Milwaukee.
